Spring Muster - 17th/18th May 2003

Five boats in two classes raced from Kip to Tarbert, in a South Easterly breeze which was less than forecast, in intermittent heavy rain which was! The five racing boats were joined in Tarbert by five who had chosen to cruise to the muster, and by several members who had arrived by road. Fifty-one members and guests sat down to dinner in the Tarbert Hotel, and an enjoyable, relaxed evening ensued. Sunday morning was cloudy but dry for the start of the Ladies Race, with a fresh south easterly wind once more. The dry weather didn't last.......

West Coast Muster – 24th/25th May

The “Gigha” weekend was organised by Alan Faichney. Tides and weather made Gigha an unrealistic target, but Stravaiger and Diva went to Loch na Cille, and a good time was had by all.

Clyde Family Barbecue – 14th/15th June

Aether, Akima (Robbie Rodgers new Maxi 1100), Out of the Blue and Whirligig rafted up at the Burnt Isles. Weather and midges prevented the event being held ashore, instead of which Robbie lit a barbecue on Akima’s pushpit.

Summer Muster at Craobh – Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th July

This was another excellent event with a barbecue in “The Big Shed”, followed by jigging into the small hours. Participants in the Round Shuna Race on Sunday morning were treated to four seasons in one day – strong wind, rain which threatened to turn to hail at one point, a flat calm followed by sunshine. Diva and Out of the Blue had a close race, but Shona took first place on corrected time despite starting ten minutes late!

Results (Round Shuna Race - Sunday 27th July): Race Officer - D Clow (Guilty)

1. Shona  2. Diva  3. Out of the Blue  4. EuroBleu  5. Corsair  6. Stravaiger.

Autumn Muster – Saturday 20th September.

The race started from Inverkip with a course set to the Holy Loch via Greenock and Rosneath point. It was obvious that the race was going to be close, with Guilty, Corsair, November Lady and Impromptu all crossing the start line as one. Corsair headed for the far shore and tacked close in. This initially looked like the winning tactic, but the wind dropped and left the McDougall team struggling to sail back into contention. Out of the Blue, Guilty and Impromptu tacked mid river and slowly lifted towards Cloch. November Lady sailed up the Inverkip shore and the three-boats ground to a halt off the Ferry Terminal at McInroy’s Point. At this time Guilty, who had earlier powered ahead, was becalmed in the middle of the channel opposite the Royal Gourock Yacht Club. The wind eventually filled in and all boats reached the mark off Greenock under spinnaker. Impromptu suffered minor gear failure which delayed the hoisting of the genoa off Rosneath, while Out of the Blue, closely followed by November Lady, stormed up the beat towards the Holy Loch and a rapidly disappearing Guilty. Guilty reached the finish first, followed by Out of the Blue, November Lady, Impromptu and Corsair; a superb race.

Saturday Evening Dinner was held in La Cantina, a superb Italian Restaurant in Dunoon. The food was of good quality and the company was excellent. Talisman II, Genevieve, Aether and Fraon had cruised to Holy Loch Marina, and “the cruisers” joined “the racers” for a most enjoyable evening.

Pursuit Race – Sunday 21st September.

The race started in little wind off the war memorial in the Holy Loch. Eventually Impromptu picked up the wind and headed towards the Greenock shore. November Lady and Corsair headed for the Dunoon shore then lifted towards Inverkip. Aether followed closely behind. At Inverkip the wind died and left a choppy sea. Impromptu sailed towards the Dunoon shore and picked up a wind bend which brought her past November Lady and Corsair, who were struggling to extract themselves from Inverkip Bay. After several close tacks in 15-20 knots of wind, November Lady rounded the finish mark off Wemyss Bay. Impromptu followed, barely a boat length behind.

Frostbite Muster – Saturday 1st November

Six boats started the race round Cumbrae from Largs in a light wind from the south-west, with Guilty establishing an early lead on the beat south. The fleet got becalmed in the Largs Channel, and struggled to round the first mark off Hunterston as the tide began to flood. A south-easterly breeze filled in which ultimately reached 10-15 knots, carrying the fleet through the Tan for a run up to the Skermorlie Channel Buoy north of Cumbrae, then a beat back to Largs. November Lady put in a superb performance, edging Guilty into second place on corrected time.

Annual Dinner and Prizegiving - Friday 5th December

The Annual Dinner at the Art Club in Glasgow was a great success with over 65 members and friends enjoying an excellent meal in good company. Graham Gillies delivered a witty, erudite after dinner speech and Joan Kenny presented the prizes, including the Shering Salver to Tom Hutchinson; November Lady of Arne.
