The Art Show and Commodore’s Reception in February
was a resounding success once more, and raised £100 for the Clyde
Lifeboat Appeal. Thanks are due to Gavin and
Joan for their hospitality, gallery director Iain Sinclair, the
musicians and last but not least the artists, without whom there
wouldn’t be a show.

Spring Muster - 22nd/23rd May 2004
Five boats raced in one class from Kip to Tarbert, in a light South Easterly breeze. Miss Behavin' Again set the early pace on the beat towards Garroch Head, hotly pursued by Swedish Lady. Guilty and Aunt Jessie followed not too far behind, and the four fastest boats soon escaped round the south end of Bute, leaving November Lady beating against a strengthening flood tide. The Race Officer set a finishing line short of Inchmarnock, the aim being to provide all five boats with a finish. Miss Behavin' Again took line honours, again!
The racing boats were joined in Tarbert by five who had cruised to the muster, including Wencarla VII sailed by founder member Bernard Groden. The sailing secretary, Tom Barrie, attended the muster with his car and caravan! Forty-five members and friends sat down to dinner in the Tarbert Hotel and an enjoyable, relaxed evening ensued. Sunday morning was dry with a light south-easterly for the start of the Ladies Race, won by Roisin Harris sailing Swedish Lady. |

Summer Muster at Craobh - 24th/25th July 2004 |
Saturday 24 July was mainly memorable for continuous horizontal rain and SW winds gusting to force 7. Despite this around 40 members, guests and children enjoyed a hugely successful barbeque in the immaculate boat shed at Craobh Marina. George Gray and Chris Garrigan manned the barbeque, bringing their surgical and diagnostic skills to the task, while the Faichney girls provided the entertainment - CDs and a stereo you understand! |
The prospect for Sunday's Round Shuna Race looked bleak so it was a relief to find the day dawning bright and clear but with a total lack of wind. By the 11 o'clock start sufficient breeze had developed from the NW to allow close beating towards the southern tip of Shuna, the fleet manoeuvring with mixed success to miss the holes and find the variable 2 to 3 patches. With local knowledge Iain Sinclair on "Black Pepper" cut the corner tightly but was soon passed by the larger boats on the reach up the Sound. There was some confusion among the leaders about which islet north of Shuna was included in the course, allowing "Black Pepper", whose skipper had written the race instructions, to take full advantage. Although third over the line, Black Pepper" had done just enough on handicap to beat Stuart Toy's "Out of the Blue", with Roy D'Silva on "Rhett Butler" finishing third. Thanks are due to Douglas Clow on "Guilty" for providing the committee vessel and to Jim Berry and his staff at Craobh Marina for making us welcome - and dry! |

Autumn Muster – Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th September.
The Autumn Muster was heralded by the onset of 2 days
of equinoxal gales, with wind gusting 40 knots on Saturday and 50
knots on Sunday. Aether, Corsair, Miss Behavin’ Again, Rhett Butler
and November Lady all braved the elements and managed to reach Holy
Loch Marina. Saturday Evening Dinner was held in La Cantina, a
superb Italian Restaurant in Dunoon. The food was of good quality
and the company as always was excellent. Although racing on Saturday
was eventually abandoned Rhett Butler and Corsair competed in the
Pursuit Race on Sunday, which was won by Rhett Butler.

Frostbite Muster – Saturday 6th November
This was held in the Largs Channel, in a variable north-westerly breeze which reached force 3 at times. Sailing Secretary Tom Barrie on Impromptu established an early lead after a busy start, and set the pace towards the windward mark – the green Skelmorlie Channel Buoy 1.4 miles north of Great Cumbrae. Half way up the windward leg the fleet split. Impromptu, Wencarla and Second Star rounded the Skelmorlie Channel Buoy 0.8 miles north of Great Cumbrae, while Corsair, Talisman and November Lady rounded the (identical) Skelmorlie Channel Buoy 1.6 miles north-east of Great Cumbrae! Tom then settled any potential argument by altering course to round the more distant mark, accompanied by Wencarla and Second Star! Meanwhile Corsair, Talisman and November Lady were sailing serenely southwards on the reach down the east side of Great Cumbrae. The wind died away in the lee of the island and the fleet struggled to round the Hunterston Channel Buoy off Farland Point, but then had a close reach to the finish off Largs Yacht Haven. There was a clear winner in each class, but only seconds between the yachts finishing second and third. Thanks are due to the Officer of the Day Gavin Kenny on Aether, ably assisted by Joan.

The Annual Dinner at the Art Club in Glasgow was a great success with over 50 members and friends enjoying an excellent meal in good company. Commodore Gavin Kenny welcomed guests Mr Boyd Tunnock CBE and his wife Anne. After dinner, Boyd spoke of his lifelong love of sailing, friends from the business world, and of his success in chairing the Clyde Lifeboat Appeal which raised over £1.3 million to purchase a new Trent class lifeboat for Troon. Joan Kenny presented the prizes, including the Shering Salver to Angus Wright, 'Aunt Jessie'. |
