Spring Muster – 20th & 21st May 2006. (Photos courtesy of Ernest Bennie)

The Race Team - Ernest and Norma Bennie, Sadie and Alan Faichney. Alan was Officer of the Day

The Spring Muster from Kip was sailed initially in light winds, with a run to Garroch Head then a beat in building seas towards Tarbert. The Class 1 yachts sailed to the finish at Tarbert, while the course for the slower Class 2 yachts was shortened, finishing off Inchmarnock. Some forty members and guests sat down to an enjoyable evening meal in good company, in the Anchor Hotel.

On Sunday morning five yachts started the Ladies Race from Tarbert to Kames. Conditions were light and slow progress was made in the following wind. Once again the two larger, faster yachts eased ahead, however they were unable to shake off the smallest yacht in the fleet, which won on handicap.

Summer Muster - 22nd/23rd July

Commodore Alan Faichney welcomed 57 members and friends to the club’s annual barbeque at Craobh Marina on Saturday 22nd July. The weather was warm, the sun shone and the midges were absent, making the right conditions for a successful event. New member Nick Pace proved to be a virtuoso performer on the barbeque, providing a continuous supply of tasty eats. Later, the party got into full swing as Tony Adgent’s accordion accompanied a boisterous Strip-the-Willow and other Scottish dances.

Sunday’s Round Shuna Race attracted 8 boats and was blessed with a moderate south westerly wind which soon had the low handicap boats stretching their legs and giving line honours to Dugald Glen in “Tulla” just in front of Charles Sutherland’s “Troika”. Corrected times however gave victory in Class 1 to Iain Morton in Eurobleu,  with Martyn Webster in the Scottish Islander “Shona” winning Class 2 by a narrow margin from Jane Faichney in her Wanderer dinghy “Jarrek” (despite having the Commodore as ballast) followed by Stuart Toy in the Moody 346 “Out of the Blue”. As ever, thanks to Douglas Clow for providing the committee vessel and to Jim Berry and his marina staff for their support and assistance.

Autumn Muster and 30th Anniversary Dinner - 16th & 17th September

bullet

Seven boats in 2 classes raced from Kip to Rhu Narrows via Strone Point and "the Sugar Boat", in an easterly breeze. The class 3 boats started first, and Tulla soon picked up her heels to take both line honours and first place in class. Guilty and Rhett Butler started 30 minutes later, with both overhauling the slowest of the class 3 boats. Committee Vessel Que Chica and Aether joined the race boats berthed in Rhu Marina, and later the crews joined other members and guests who had driven to the muster at the Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club, for dinner. Eighty five members and friends of the Club enjoyed a delicious four course meal, in the company of Jock Fleming, RNCYC Vice-Commodore, and his wife Margaret. Commodore Alan Faichney invited three Past-Commodores, Bobby Corbett, Pamela Sinclair and Neil McDougall to speak about three decades of the Serpent Yacht Club, following which Jock Fleming invited the guests to toast the Club. A wonderfully successful evening.

Sunday was cloudy and drizzly with an initially light south-easterly breeze, for the Pursuit Race back to Kip. Tulla repeated her performance from the previous day, and overhauled the entire fleet to win in style.

Annual Dinner and Prize-Giving - Friday 8th December 2006

This was held once more at the Glasgow Art Club, with fifty two members and friends of the club in attendance, and guests Dr Gordon Todd and his partner Pamela Anderson. Alan and Sadie Faichney awarded the trophies, Gordon delivered the after dinner speech, and Douglas Russell replied on behalf of the club - including a reference to Gordon's skills at completing "The Wee Stinker" crossword
